How She Reversed Her Type 2 Diabetes with Terri Lance, PhD - Coach at The Fasting Method

Today, I am blessed to have here with me, Dr. Terri. In 2017, she began training with Dr. Jason Fung and Megan Ramos to become an intermittent fasting coach to help others address their mindset and develop healthy, sustainable habits. Coaching combines Terri’s research knowledge in the areas of therapeutic fasting and nutrition, with her clinical experience as a licensed behavioral psychologist and educator.

In this episode, Dr. Terri opens the show by revealing how she managed to reverse her type two diabetes diagnosis. Dr. Terri speaks about why people stay stuck in their unhealthy habits and how you can transform a fixed mindset into a growth mindset. [01:50] How Dr. Terri Reversed Her Type Two Diabetes Through Lifestyle Choices

  • Dr. Terri grew up overweight and struggled with her weight through college.
  • During graduate school, Dr. Terri was diagnosed with type two diabetes.
  • In her 40s, Dr. Terri finally started to change her lifestyle habits. She went with a Whole 30 approach.
  • After quitting grains, sugar, and dairy, Dr. Terri felt so much better. 
  • Eventually, Dr. Terri lost 100 pounds and came off all three of her diabetic medications. 
  • In 2017, she became an intermittent fasting coach with The Fasting Method. 

[10:10] Why Do People Stay Stuck When It Comes To Their Health?

  • A lot of it stems from limiting beliefs that we learned growing up. 
  • Most people have tried fifty or sixty diets. So, it’s challenging to see the possibility of change and growth because nothing has worked so far. 
  • Most of us are still a little reluctant to believe changing our health is possible for us. 
  • We need to shift our thought patterns; that way, our brains will shift. 

[16:05] How To Transform Your Fixed Mindset To A Growth Mindset

  • If you have a growth mindset, you see other people's success as an indicator of what's possible.
  • Many of us look at other people’s success and feel challenged by it. 
  • When you see someone else has achieved success, you should be curious. 
  • Your journey will not look exactly like someone else’s. However, you can always learn from others. 

[30:10] How To Allow Yourself To Let Go of Your Limiting Beliefs 

  • Pay attention to your response when you think it. 
  • What is happening in your body? Do you feel relaxed? 
  • If you are struggling with your thoughts, then try some journaling. 
  • Think about where your limiting beliefs come from and when you learned about them.
  • Our limiting beliefs can be so sneaky that they can be handed down by people you love.

  • Currently, Dr. Terri is working on imposter syndrome.
  • When she gets positive feedback, it is still hard for her to hear. 
  • Dr. Terri wants to put herself out there more and trust herself. 
  • She needs to remember that she doesn’t have to be perfect. 
  • Lastly, it’s essential to be open to receiving.
